Sensex Breaches Jan Low - Down 800 Points

Selling pressure continued unabated with no fresh buying whatsoever, despite the drop in share prices as global and domestic uncertainties prevailed.

At 3:10 pm, the Sensex was down 800 points or 4.6 per cent at 15,326.91.

Hindalco Industries, down 8.19 per cent, took the sharpest knock. Other losers comprised Reliance Energy (7.64%), DLF (7.46%), BHEL (6.97%), Reliance Communications (6.32%), Tata Steel (5.86%), Wipro (5.86%) and ICICI Bank (5.4%).
There were no losers in the 30-share index.

The Nifty was down 236 points or 4.85 per cent lower at 4635.90.
Stocks in Europe and Asia dropped after Carlyle Group's mortgage-bond fund said it will default on its remaining debt and the dollar slumped against the euro and the yen, dimming the earnings outlook for banks and automakers. US index futures also retreated.

The FTSE was down 2.13 per cent in London, the DAX shed 2.46 per cent and CAC lost 2.2 per cent.

In the Asia-Pacific region, the Nikkei 225 finished 3.33 per cent lower, the Hang Seng dropped 4.79 per cent and the Straits Times fell 3.85 per cent.
